We were at second dress rehearsal, and we had not been able to run the show. Different technical difficulties had set us back, over and over again. It culminated with a section of set collapsing during a transition. Our TD had to go to the hospital after being struck by the wall that had fallen. Feeling the tension in the room, I offered to project the set design onto the remaining walls of the stage as a means of cobbling the production together. My assistant and myself stayed until about 3 am to accomplish this. It ended up working quite well, but the stress was palpable. Did I mention I was 7 months pregnant at the time?

How to Make Theatre during a Pandemic?
We were enrolled in a devised theatre class. We were so excited to create original art. Then the COVID-19 pandemic shook the world. Determined to move forward and determined to not do a zoom play (they were a good effort, but not great) we concocted our own method for COVID friendly theatre work. We invested in green screen equipment, wrote original, short pieces, and filmed them. Everyone was masked except a single actor. Then we would do a second take with a new actor unmasked. Then we animated the different takes together to give the illusion of intimate, unmasked scenes. It was incredibly labor intensive, but we ended up with a product of which we could be proud.

Mimicking a Homebrew Campaign
The overall concept was to have the art style of the projection look hand drawn. Almost as though the imagery had been ripped out of a campaign notebook. The sketching/animation was all executed by myself with hardware support from Sera Shearer, the other Projection Designer.
